Which Bangkok DLT Office Is Best for Foreigners?

By TDL Service Team|

Not All DLT Offices Are Created Equal

Bangkok has several DLT (Department of Land Transport) offices where foreigners can apply for or convert a driving license. But from our extensive experience accompanying foreign clients, the difference in experience between offices can be dramatic — from wait times to English-speaking staff to how well they handle foreign documentation.

This guide breaks down the main DLT offices in Bangkok, based on our firsthand experience visiting each one regularly with clients. We'll help you choose the right office for your situation.

Chatuchak (Main DLT Office) — Our Top Recommendation

Address: 1032 Phaholyothin Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900

Nearest BTS: Mo Chit (10-minute walk) or taxi from Mo Chit BTS

Our rating: Best for foreigners

The Chatuchak DLT office is the main headquarters and our top recommendation for foreign applicants. Here's why:

  • Dedicated foreign section: This office has a separate counter and queue for foreign applicants, which means you're not competing with the much larger Thai applicant queue.
  • English-speaking staff: The foreign section typically has officers who speak functional English, making the document check smoother.
  • Full service range: Handles new applications, conversions, renewals, motorcycle licenses, and International Driving Permits.
  • Written test available in multiple languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, and more.

Wait Times

If you arrive by 8:00 AM, you can typically be done by noon to early afternoon. The foreign queue usually processes 30–50 applicants per day. Arriving after 9:30 AM can mean waiting until the afternoon or even being asked to return the next day during peak periods.

Tips for Chatuchak

  • Use the digital queue system — take a number immediately upon arriving
  • There's a cafeteria inside the building and convenience stores nearby
  • Photocopy and photo services are available on-site but get crowded; bring your own copies

Bangkapi DLT Office

Address: Seri Thai Road, Bangkapi, Bangkok

Our rating: Good alternative, less crowded

The Bangkapi office is a solid alternative to Chatuchak, particularly if you live on the east side of Bangkok.

  • Less crowded than Chatuchak, meaning shorter wait times — typically 2–3 hours total versus 4–5 at Chatuchak
  • Handles foreign applications including new licenses and conversions
  • English support is limited compared to Chatuchak — having a Thai speaker with you is helpful
  • Written test available in English and some other languages

Wait Times

Generally faster than Chatuchak. Arriving at 8:00 AM, most people are done by 11:00 AM to noon. However, the staff process fewer foreign applicants per day, so if there's a problem with your documents, the resolution can take longer.

Best for: Expats who live in eastern Bangkok, conversions (simpler process), and anyone who wants to avoid the Chatuchak crowds.

Other Bangkok Area DLT Offices

Thonburi (Pinklao) DLT Office

Location: Borommaratchachonnani Road, west side of Bangkok

The Thonburi office handles foreign applications but processes fewer foreigners per day than Chatuchak or Bangkapi. English support is minimal. We recommend this office only if you live in the Thonburi / west Bangkok area and are doing a straightforward conversion with all documents properly prepared.

Sai Mai DLT Office

Location: Phaholyothin Road, northern Bangkok

A smaller office that technically accepts foreign applications but sees very few foreign applicants. Staff may be unfamiliar with foreign documentation requirements, which can lead to confusion and delays. We generally don't recommend this office for foreigners unless you have very specific reasons for going there.

Provincial Offices (Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan)

Several DLT offices in Bangkok's surrounding provinces also accept foreign applications. These can be hit-or-miss — some are efficient and quiet, while others are understaffed and unfamiliar with foreign documents. If you live in one of these areas, it may be worth trying your local office for a simple conversion, but for new license applications, we recommend making the trip to Chatuchak.

What to Expect on Your Visit

Regardless of which office you choose, here's what to expect:

  • Arrive early. DLT offices open at 8:00 AM (some start accepting queues at 7:30). The earlier you arrive, the faster you'll finish. Peak days are Monday and Friday — midweek is generally quieter.
  • Dress appropriately. While there's no strict dress code, officials prefer neat, respectful attire. Avoid overly casual beachwear.
  • Bring water and snacks. The process can take several hours. While most offices have canteens, bringing your own ensures you're comfortable.
  • Have all documents ready. The number-one reason for wasted trips is missing documents. Check our requirements guide and double-check everything the night before.
  • Be patient and polite. DLT officers process hundreds of applications daily. A patient, respectful attitude goes a long way, especially when there are questions about your foreign documents.

Our Recommendation

For the vast majority of foreigners in Bangkok, we recommend the Chatuchak DLT office. Its dedicated foreign section, English-speaking staff, and multi-language test options make it the most reliable choice. Yes, it's busier than other offices, but the staff are experienced with foreign applications and less likely to be confused by unusual visa types or documentation.

If Chatuchak's crowds concern you and you're doing a straightforward conversion (not a new application), Bangkapi is an excellent alternative with shorter wait times.
