Expired Less Than 1 Year
If your license expired less than 1 year ago, the renewal process is simple. You only need to pass the aptitude tests (color blindness, depth perception, reaction time, peripheral vision). No written or driving test is required. The process is essentially the same as a standard renewal. Bring your expired license, passport, and a new medical certificate.
Expired 1-3 Years
If your license has been expired for 1-3 years, you must retake the written theory test in addition to the aptitude tests. You do not need to take the practical driving test. Expired More Than 3 Years
If your license has been expired for more than 3 years, it is treated as if you are applying for a brand-new license. You must complete the full application process including all aptitude tests, written test, and practical driving test. You will receive a new 2-year temporary license.
Consequences of Driving with an Expired License
Driving with an expired license in Thailand is illegal and carries a fine of up to 2,000 THB. More importantly, your insurance coverage may be invalid if you are involved in an accident while driving with an expired license. This can leave you personally liable for damages. If you realize your license has expired, stop driving and arrange renewal as soon as possible.
