Which Renewal Guide Do You Need?

This page is the full in-person walkthrough for renewing a Thai driving license at a DLT office: the documents for every situation, the tests you actually take since June 2026, the fee for every license type, how long each step takes, and what changes once a license has expired. It covers car and motorcycle licenses, and both ways of ending up with a 5-year card.

Jump straight to your case: renewing to a 5-year license (from a 2-year temporary card or an expiring 5-year card), renewing a motorcycle license, or the documents checklist.

Three situations have their own guide. For what can be done online, read the online renewal status guide. Short version: training and queue booking are online, the rest is not, and the no-visit e-service had still not opened when we last checked on 26 October 2026. For the extra timing rules on a 2-year temporary card, see the temporary-to-permanent extension guide. If your license has already expired, the expired-license guide goes deeper on the 1-year and 3-year thresholds.

Renew a Thai Driving License for 5 Years: 2-Year to 5-Year, or 5-Year to 5-Year

You get a 5-year Thai driving license by renewing at any DLT office. If you hold the 2-year temporary card you got first, it is replaced with a 5-year card. If you already hold a 5-year card that is running out, you renew it for another 5 years. The visit is the same in both cases: e-learning, two quick eye tests if you are 55 or under, 505 THB for a car or 255 THB for a motorcycle, and the new card is printed the same day.

The one thing that decides whether you walk out with a 5-year card is your visa. On a tourist visa the DLT issues another 2-year temporary card, whichever card you came in with (see the visa section below). Over 55, you also take the brake-reaction test.

For what the 5-year license is and who qualifies, read our 5-year Thai driving license guide. For the timing rules specific to temporary cards, see the extension guide.

Renewing a Motorcycle (Motorbike) License in Thailand

A Thai motorcycle license renews the same way as a car license: any DLT office, the same documents, the same aptitude checks. The e-learning is the same too: about 1 hour, or 2 hours if the license expired more than a year ago. What differs is the fee: 255 THB for a 5-year motorcycle card instead of 505 THB for a car.

A motorcycle license and a car license are separate licenses with their own expiry dates, so renew each one inside its own window. If you hold both, you can renew them in one visit for 760 THB. Complete the e-learning before the visit and bring the completion certificate for each license you renew.

The motorcycle-specific trap is a long lapse. If your motorcycle license has been expired for more than 3 years, you are a new applicant. That means the written test, the practical riding test on the DLT course, and a 2-year temporary card for 105 THB. You must bring your own motorcycle for that test, because the DLT does not provide one. Under 1 year expired, nothing changes: same visit, same 255 THB.

When to Renew Your Thai Driving License

You can renew your Thai driving license up to 6 months (180 days) before its expiration date — some offices and older guides still quote a 90-day window, so anything inside 90 days is accepted everywhere without discussion. We recommend starting the process about 6 weeks before expiry: that gives you time to complete the mandatory e-learning course, obtain your medical and residence certificates, and book a DLT Smart Queue appointment on a date that works for you. Do not wait until the last week. If your license expires before you renew, the process gets harder depending on how long you wait. Expired under 1 year means aptitude tests only (same as a standard renewal). Expired 1 to 3 years means you must retake the written theory test, scoring at least 45 out of 50 (90%). Expired more than 3 years means the DLT treats you as a brand-new applicant — full written test, practical driving test, and classroom training. Your new license starts from the old expiry date if you renew before it expires, so you lose nothing by renewing early. Set a calendar reminder and protect yourself from unnecessary hassle.

2026 Changes: Fewer Tests, Online Training, Priority Booking

Renewal got easier twice in 2026, and most guides have not caught up. First, a ministerial regulation published in the Royal Gazette on 5 September 2025 took effect in early March 2026: drivers aged 55 or under whose license is still valid, or expired less than 1 year, no longer take the full battery of physical fitness tests. Then on 16 June 2026 the DLT went further, on the Medical Council's recommendation: the colour-blindness test was scrapped for ALL renewals (only first-time applicants still take it), and the brake-reaction test was waived for the 55-and-under, expired-under-1-year group — leaving just two quick checks, peripheral vision and depth perception. Drivers over 55, and anyone whose license lapsed more than a year, still take the fuller battery. Training is still required for every renewal: do it online in advance at www.dlt-elearning.com (about 1 hour for a car or motorcycle license, 2 hours if it expired more than a year ago — you cannot skip or fast-forward the videos, and the completion certificate is valid for 180 days) or sit the training video at the DLT office on the day. Doing it online first typically saves 1 to 2 hours. Booking through DLT Smart Queue at gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin is not mandatory for renewals — walk-ins are accepted nationwide — but booked applicants are served first, so a booking is still the smart move at busy offices.

Can You Renew Your Thai Driving License Online?

Partially — and here is the status most guides get wrong. The training (www.dlt-elearning.com) and the queue booking (gecc.dlt.go.th) have been online for a while, and you can check your license status through the DLT e-Service portal. A fully online renewal — no office visit at all — was expected when its enabling regulation took effect on 4 March 2026, but the DLT postponed the e-service launch in February 2026 because the digital medical-certificate link with the Ministry of Public Health was not ready. The revised June 2026 target also passed with no public launch, and as of 26 October 2026 — our latest check of DLT announcements in Thai and English — there is still no opening notice, so despite what many sites claim, the fully online renewal is not yet available to anyone. The newest date is December 2026: on 15 October 2026 Thairath, quoting a senior DLT source, reported that the medical-certificate link was well advanced and the service was expected to start that month, with the eye check done by a doctor and the card sent by post. That is a target, not a launch. The announced flow will run on the ThaID app (which requires a Thai national ID), and the DLT has said nothing about foreigner access, so foreign passport holders should plan on renewing in person either way. The good news is the in-person visit itself got shorter — since June 2026 most renewals involve only two quick aptitude checks (see the 2026 changes above). We re-check this monthly. Our online license renewal guide below covers the full status in detail.

Documents Required for Renewal

Here is the complete checklist for a standard Thai driving license renewal in 2026. Your current Thai driving license — bring it even if expired. Your original passport with a valid visa. A medical certificate from a licensed Thai clinic, issued within the past 30 days (cost: 100 to 500 THB depending on the clinic). A residence certificate from your local Immigration office, issued within the past 30 days (cost: 200 to 500 THB depending on the office). Your e-learning completion certificate from www.dlt-elearning.com (or plan to watch the training at the office). Your DLT Smart Queue appointment confirmation if you booked one. The residence certificate requires that your TM30 notification is on file at Immigration. Apply for the residence certificate at least 3 business days before your DLT appointment, as processing times vary. Some DLT offices also ask for photocopies of your passport photo page, visa page, and TDAC arrival confirmation (the digital arrival card that replaced the paper TM6 in May 2025), so bring copies of everything to be safe. The medical certificate is a simple form — visit any clinic displaying a 'medical certificate' sign, and the doctor will check your basic fitness. No blood test or extensive examination is needed.

Documents by Situation: Work Permit, Retirement Visa, Tourist Visa, Expired License

The core checklist above is the same for everyone; what changes is the proof-of-address document and the visa page the officer looks at. If you work in Thailand: a valid work permit substitutes for the non-immigrant visa check, but it is not accepted as proof of address — the address in it is often your employer's — so you still need a residence certificate from Immigration, a Yellow House Book (Tabien Baan), or an embassy-issued affidavit of residence. If you are on a retirement or marriage extension (Non-O): passport with the current extension stamp, plus the residence certificate; the DLT reads the extension stamp, not the original visa sticker, so make sure the stamp is valid on the day. If you are on a tourist visa: you can still renew, but expect a 2-year temporary license rather than a 5-year card, and the residence certificate is still required — offices will not process a renewal on a visa-exemption stamp, so the safe route is a visa or extension in the passport. If your license is expired: bring the expired card anyway (the DLT needs it to pull your record), and if it lapsed more than a year plan for the written test on the same day. In every case, bring photocopies of the passport photo page, the visa or extension page, and the TDAC arrival confirmation — DLT copy counters charge 5 to 10 THB per page and queues form at them.

The Medical Certificate: What the DLT Accepts

The DLT wants a medical certificate on the standard Medical Council form — the five-disease form in force since 2021 — issued by a licensed Thai doctor within 30 days of your visit. Any clinic that shows a 'medical certificate' sign can issue it in minutes: the doctor does a basic fitness check and asks about the listed conditions; there is no blood test and no eye exam. Expect 100 to 300 THB at a private clinic near the DLT; public health centres are cheaper and hospitals dearer. Two things get certificates rejected at the counter: a date older than 30 days on the day you renew, and a free-text letter instead of the standard form. The digital medical-certificate link between the DLT and the Ministry of Public Health — the piece that held up the online renewal — is still not live, so a paper certificate is the only kind the counter takes. Our medical certificate guide lists clinics near the main DLT offices.

Step-by-Step Renewal Process

Step 1: Complete the e-learning course at www.dlt-elearning.com. Register, click the 'For Foreigner' button, and work through all video modules. Save your completion certificate. Step 2: Book a DLT Smart Queue appointment at gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin for priority service, or plan a walk-in — renewals accept walk-ins at every office, served after booked applicants. Step 3: Obtain a medical certificate from any Thai clinic (within 30 days of your visit). Step 4: Get a residence certificate from your local Immigration office (within 30 days of your visit, cost 200 to 500 THB depending on the office). Step 5: On the day, arrive at the DLT office with all documents. Check in at the foreign applicant counter. Step 6: Submit your documents for verification — there is no application form to bring; the officer produces the renewal application from your license record and you check and sign it (that is the 5 THB application fee inside the total). Step 7: Take the aptitude tests. Since June 2026 most renewals involve only two — peripheral vision and depth perception — if you are 55 or under and your license is valid or expired under a year. The colour-blindness test no longer applies to any renewal; over-55s and longer lapses also take the brake-reaction test. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. Step 8: Have your photo taken for the new license card. Step 9: Pay the renewal fee (505 THB for car, 255 THB for motorcycle). Step 10: Receive your new license, printed and issued on the spot. The entire DLT visit typically takes 1 to 3 hours depending on the office and time of day.

Renewal by License Status: What You Take, What You Pay, What You Get

Use this as the table you would draw on a napkin. License still valid, or expired under 1 year, and you are 55 or under: e-learning (about 1 hour) plus two aptitude checks — peripheral vision and depth perception — no colour test, no brake-reaction test, no written or driving test; fee 505 THB car or 255 THB motorcycle; new 5-year card printed the same day (a 2-year temporary card if your visa only qualifies you for that). Same license status but you are over 55: identical documents and e-learning, with the brake-reaction test added, so three aptitude checks; same fee, same-day card. Expired 1 to 3 years, any age: e-learning, the full aptitude battery (brake reaction, peripheral vision, depth perception — the colour test is gone for all renewals), plus the 50-question written test with a 45-correct (90%) pass mark; same renewal fee; same-day card if you pass, and a retake is possible if you fail — ask the office when. Expired more than 3 years, any age: you are a new applicant — the longer new-applicant training (about 4 hours), the full aptitude battery, the written test and the practical driving test, and you receive a 2-year temporary license (205 THB car, 105 THB motorcycle) rather than a 5-year card. In every row the medical certificate, the residence certificate and the passport with a valid visa are required, and the renewed card is issued at the office on the day.

Renewal at Different DLT Offices

You can renew your Thai driving license at any DLT office in Thailand, regardless of where it was originally issued. This is a significant convenience — if you obtained your license in Bangkok but now live in Chiang Mai, simply renew at the Chiang Mai DLT. Smaller provincial DLT offices tend to be less crowded and faster than the Bangkok headquarters at Chatuchak (the office also called Mo Chit DLT). If you are in Bangkok, the four area offices — Phra Khanong on Sukhumvit, Bang Khun Thian off Rama II, Taling Chan west of the river, and Nong Chok in the far east — all renew licenses and usually see fewer foreign applicants than Chatuchak. There is no DLT office in Bang Kapi or Sai Mai, whatever older guides say. Pattaya, Phuket, and Chiang Mai offices are experienced with foreign applicants and generally process renewals efficiently. Wherever you go, arrive on time for your Smart Queue appointment — if you miss your slot, you will need to rebook. Morning appointments tend to move faster as the office is fresh and queues have not built up yet.

Visa Requirements and the Visa Validity Trap

Your visa type directly affects what license you can receive. If you hold a tourist visa, you can only obtain or renew a 2-year temporary license — you cannot get a 5-year permanent license on a tourist visa. To receive a 5-year license, you need a non-immigrant visa (such as a Non-B work visa, Non-O marriage or retirement visa, or Non-ED education visa). Be aware of the visa validity trap: some DLT offices check how much time remains on your visa and will only issue a 2-year license if your visa has less than 1 year of validity remaining, even if you hold a non-immigrant visa. A few offices require your visa to be valid for at least 15 more days at the time of renewal. The safest approach is to renew your driving license shortly after renewing your visa, when you have maximum validity remaining. If you are on annual visa extensions, renew your driving license within a few weeks of receiving your new visa stamp. This avoids any arguments at the DLT counter about visa validity periods.

Cost Breakdown

Here is every fee you can expect when renewing your Thai driving license in 2026. DLT renewal fee: 505 THB for a car license, 255 THB for a motorcycle license, or 760 THB if you renew both together. Medical certificate: 100 to 500 THB depending on the clinic (most charge 100 to 200 THB). Residence certificate from Immigration: 200 to 500 THB depending on the office. Photocopies at DLT (if needed): 5 to 10 THB per page. E-learning course: free. DLT Smart Queue booking: free. Total out-of-pocket for a car license renewal: approximately 800 to 1,500 THB if you handle everything yourself. For motorcycle only, the total is approximately 550 to 1,250 THB. Payment at DLT is typically cash, though some offices now accept PromptPay. Immigration offices generally accept cash only for the residence certificate. These costs were re-verified in August 2026.

Renewal Fee Table by License Type (DLT Schedule, 2026)

Every DLT renewal fee is a license fee plus a 5 THB application fee — the 5 THB is the application the counter generates for you to sign. Car, 5-year renewal: 505 THB (500 + 5). Motorcycle, 5-year renewal: 255 THB (250 + 5). Car and motorcycle renewed in the same visit: 760 THB. Car, 2-year temporary license (issued when your visa does not qualify you for the 5-year card, or after a lapse of more than 3 years): 205 THB (200 + 5). Motorcycle, 2-year temporary: 105 THB (100 + 5). Upgrade from a 2-year temporary to the 5-year card: the same 505 THB car or 255 THB motorcycle as a renewal. A lost or damaged card is a replacement, not a renewal — separate fee, covered in our replacement guide, and it does not restart your validity. There is no late fee for renewing after expiry: the price of waiting is extra tests, not extra baht. These are the DLT's published amounts; the only variable costs are the medical certificate, the residence certificate and photocopies, listed in the cost breakdown above.

How Long Each Step Takes

Planning backwards from your DLT date: e-learning, about 1 hour (2 hours if the license expired more than a year ago), done at home any time in the 180 days before the visit. Residence certificate: apply at Immigration at least 3 business days before the DLT visit — processing varies by office from same-day to several days — and use it within 30 days. Medical certificate: minutes at a clinic, valid 30 days, so get it in the last week. Smart Queue booking: a few minutes online; morning slots at busy Bangkok offices fill first, so book as soon as your certificates are in hand. The DLT visit itself: 1 to 3 hours with a booking — as little as 30 to 45 minutes at a quiet provincial office when your documents are complete — and longer as a walk-in, since booked applicants are served first. Card printing: on the spot; you leave with the new license. Add the written test to the day if your license lapsed 1 to 3 years, and expect the practical driving test on a separate day if it lapsed more than 3 years. Start six weeks out and none of this is tight.

What If Your License Has Expired?

The consequences of an expired license depend on how long it has lapsed. Expired less than 1 year: the process is identical to a standard renewal. You take only the short aptitude checks — two (peripheral vision and depth perception) if you are 55 or under, three with brake reaction if you are over 55 — and no written or driving test. This is the easiest scenario and the most common one for people who just missed their renewal window. Expired 1 to 3 years: you must retake the written theory test (50 questions, minimum score 45 correct — that is 90%), in addition to the aptitude tests. You do not need a practical driving test. Study using the official DLT question bank, as the questions are pulled directly from it. Expired more than 3 years: the DLT treats you as a completely new applicant. You must complete the full process — e-learning, written test, practical driving test, and all aptitude tests. You will be issued a new 2-year temporary license, not a 5-year license. Driving with an expired license is illegal in Thailand and carries a fine of up to 2,000 THB. More critically, your motor insurance may be void if you are in an accident with an expired license, leaving you personally liable for all damages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a residence certificate for renewal in 2026?
Yes, most DLT offices now require a residence certificate for renewals. Obtain one from your local Immigration office within 30 days of your DLT visit. It costs 200 to 500 THB depending on the office and requires a TM30 notification on file. A few smaller offices may waive this requirement, but bring one to be safe.
Can I renew my Thai license on a tourist visa?
Yes, but you will only receive a 2-year temporary license. A 5-year permanent license requires a non-immigrant visa (Non-B, Non-O, Non-ED, etc.). Some DLT offices also check remaining visa validity, so renew your license soon after your visa is stamped.
How long does the renewal process take in 2026?
The DLT visit itself takes 1 to 3 hours with a Smart Queue appointment. Add 2 hours beforehand for the mandatory e-learning course (done at home online) and a day or two for obtaining your medical and residence certificates. Your new license is printed and issued on the spot.
How long is a Thai driving license valid?
For the first time, a temporary 2-year driving license is issued. Then, after 2 years, you exchange it for a permanent 5-year license — that exchange uses the same renewal process described on this page. You need a non-immigrant visa to receive the 5-year license; on a tourist visa you get another 2-year temporary license. Every renewal after that issues a new 5-year license.
Is the e-learning course mandatory for renewal?
Training is required for every renewal, but you have two ways to do it: complete the DLT e-learning online at www.dlt-elearning.com before your visit (about 1 hour for a car or motorcycle license, 2 hours if it expired more than a year ago; certificate valid 180 days), or watch the training session at the DLT office on the day. Doing it online first is faster and lets you go straight to the tests.
Can I renew my Thai driving license online?
No — and as of 26 October 2026, nobody can. The fully online renewal was postponed past its March and June 2026 targets and has not opened yet; the latest reported target, from a DLT source quoted by Thairath on 15 October 2026, is December 2026. When it does open, its announced identity check runs on the ThaID app (Thai national ID required), and the DLT has said nothing about foreigners. The e-learning and booking steps are online for everyone; the tests, photo, and card printing happen at the office.
Can I renew at any DLT office in Thailand?
Yes, you can renew your Thai driving license at any DLT office nationwide, regardless of where it was originally issued. Smaller provincial offices are often faster than the main Bangkok offices.
What happens if I miss my Smart Queue appointment?
If you miss your scheduled DLT Smart Queue appointment, rebook a new slot through the system at gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin — or simply walk in. Renewals accept walk-ins nationwide; you will be served after booked applicants, which can add 1 to 2 hours at busy offices.
Do I need to take a written test for renewal?
Not if your license is still valid or expired by less than 1 year — you only take the short aptitude checks (just two tests for most renewals since June 2026). If expired 1 to 3 years, you must also pass the written test (45/50, 90%). If expired over 3 years, you restart the entire process.
Can I renew both my car and motorcycle licenses at the same time?
Yes. You can renew both licenses in a single DLT visit. The combined fee is 760 THB (505 THB car plus 255 THB motorcycle). Complete the e-learning for both vehicle types before your appointment.
How do I renew a Thai motorcycle license?
The same way as a car license: complete the e-learning (about 1 hour) at www.dlt-elearning.com, then visit any DLT office with your passport and visa, current license, and a medical certificate and residence certificate dated within 30 days. If you are 55 or under and the license is valid or expired under 1 year, you take two eye tests (peripheral vision and depth perception), pay 255 THB, and get the new 5-year card the same day.
Can I renew my Thai driving license for 5 years?
Yes, if you hold a non-immigrant visa or extension. Both a 2-year temporary card and an expiring 5-year card are renewed to a 5-year card at the DLT for 505 THB (car) or 255 THB (motorcycle), with e-learning and the short aptitude checks and no driving test. On a tourist visa you get another 2-year temporary card instead.
