Do I need a Thai license to get an IDP in Thailand?

Yes — and specifically a 5-year Thai driving license. A 2-year temporary license (what all first-time foreign applicants receive) does NOT qualify for a Thai-issued IDP. If you currently hold a 2-year license, you must first upgrade it to a 5-year license before applying for an IDP. The IDP is essentially an official translation of your Thai license for international use.

How long is the IDP valid?

A Thai-issued IDP is valid for 1 year from the date of issue. However, it cannot be valid beyond the expiry date of your Thai driving license.

Can I use an IDP instead of getting a Thai license?

An IDP from your home country can be used temporarily in Thailand (up to 90 days for tourists), but it is NOT a substitute for a Thai driving license if you are a resident. For long-term stays, you need a proper Thai license.

Which countries accept the Thai IDP?

The Thai IDP is recognized under two international conventions. The 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is accepted in 101 countries, including Japan, USA, Korea, and Spain. The 1968 Vienna Convention IDP is accepted in 84 countries but is not valid in Japan, USA, Korea, or Spain. Together, this covers most of Europe, the Americas, and many Asian countries.
