Getting Started

Can foreigners get a Thai driving license?
Yes. Any foreigner with a valid visa (tourist, retirement, work permit, education, etc.) can apply for a Thai driving license at any DLT office in Thailand. You'll need specific documents depending on your visa type.
What documents do I need for a Thai driving license?
The core documents are: passport with valid visa, residence certificate from immigration or embassy letter, medical certificate, passport-size photos, and a valid foreign license (if converting). Requirements vary by DLT office — use our document checklist tool for a personalized list.
How long does the entire process take?
The DLT visit itself takes 3-5 hours for a new license or 1-3 hours for a conversion. However, gathering documents (residence certificate, medical certificate, translations) typically takes 2-5 days. With our full service, we handle all prep so the DLT visit is your only commitment.
How much does a Thai driving license cost?
Government fees at DLT are 205 THB for a 2-year temporary license or 505 THB for a 5-year license. Additional costs include the medical certificate (~100-200 THB), residence certificate (varies by embassy), and any translation/notarization fees. Use our cost calculator for a detailed breakdown.

License Types

What's the difference between a temporary and 5-year license?
First-time applicants receive a 2-year temporary license. After 1 year, you can upgrade to a 5-year license. If you're converting a foreign license, some DLT offices issue the 5-year license directly, while others start with the 2-year temporary.
Can I get both car and motorcycle licenses?
Yes, and we recommend doing both on the same day if possible. You'll need to take separate tests for each, but the document requirements are the same. We can arrange both in a single DLT visit.
Do I need a separate license for a motorcycle?
Yes. A Thai car license does not cover motorcycles. You need a separate motorcycle license, which requires its own written and practical tests. Driving a motorcycle without the proper license is illegal and insurance companies will deny claims.

Tests & Exams

What's on the written test?
The DLT written test has 50 multiple-choice questions covering Thai traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. You need 45 out of 50 (90%) to pass. The test is available in English.
What are the practical driving tests?
For new licenses, there are several practical tests: color blind test, depth perception, peripheral vision, reaction time, and a driving course (forward/reverse parking, 3-point turn, hill start, S-curve). For license conversions, most offices only require the vision/reaction tests.
What happens if I fail the test?
If you fail the written or practical test, you can retake it the next business day at no additional fee (you'll need to queue again). With our service, we reschedule and accompany you for the retake at no extra charge.
Is there a mandatory training course?
New license applicants must watch a 1-hour safety video at DLT (some offices may extend to 4-5 hours for first-time applicants without a foreign license). License conversions typically only require 1 hour. This is included in the DLT visit.

License Conversion

Can I convert my foreign license to a Thai license?
Yes, most foreign licenses can be converted to a Thai license. You'll still need to pass the written test and basic practical tests, but the process is faster than getting a new license. Your foreign license must be valid (not expired).
Which countries' licenses can be converted?
Licenses from virtually all countries can be converted, but the process varies. Some countries have agreements with Thailand that simplify conversion. Licenses from countries not in the Geneva/Vienna conventions may require additional documentation.
Do I need my foreign license translated?
If your license is not in English or Thai, you'll need an official translation. Some DLT offices accept embassy-certified translations, while others require a sworn translator. We can arrange translation and notarization as part of our service.

Documents & Requirements

What is a residence certificate and how do I get one?
A residence certificate proves your Thai address. You can get one from: (1) Your country's embassy in Thailand (~500-1,500 THB, takes 1-3 days), or (2) Thai Immigration (free but requires a TM30 receipt). Different DLT offices accept different types.
Do I need a work permit?
No. A work permit is not required for a Thai driving license. You need a valid visa (any type) and a residence certificate. Even tourist visa holders can apply.
What if my visa expires soon?
You can apply for a license as long as your visa is valid on the day of the DLT visit. However, if you have less than a month remaining, some DLT offices may ask you to show proof of an extension or onward visa. We recommend having at least 2 weeks of visa validity remaining.

Renewal & International Permits

How do I renew my Thai driving license?
You can renew up to 3 months before expiry at any DLT office. Renewal requires: current license, passport, medical certificate, and residence certificate. The process takes 1-2 hours and costs 505 THB. There's no written test for renewals, just basic vision/reaction tests.
Can I get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from Thailand?
Yes — but only if you hold a valid 5-year Thai driving license. A 2-year temporary license (what first-time foreign applicants receive) does NOT qualify; you must first upgrade to the 5-year license. Once eligible, you can get an IDP at any DLT office. It costs 505 THB and is valid for 1 year. The IDP lets you drive in countries that recognize the Geneva (1949) or Vienna (1968) conventions.
Can I drive in Thailand with an International Driving Permit?
Yes, but only temporarily. An IDP issued by your home country is valid in Thailand for up to 90 days. For longer stays, you should get a Thai driving license. Note: only IDPs from countries that signed the 1949 Geneva Convention are recognized — check if your country qualifies.
