Which Visa Do You Need for a Thai Driving License?

Not every visa qualifies you for a Thai driving license. Here is a clear breakdown of which visas are accepted and which are not.

Visa Types Accepted by the DLT

The following visa types are accepted for driving license applications: Non-Immigrant B (business/work), Non-Immigrant O (dependent, retirement, volunteer, Thai spouse), Non-Immigrant OA and OX (long-stay retirement), Non-Immigrant ED (education/student), Thailand Elite visa, Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa, SMART visa, and Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). A valid work permit is also accepted, even without a non-immigrant visa stamp in your passport.

Visa Types NOT Accepted

The following are generally NOT accepted: Tourist visa (TR), Visa exemption / visa on arrival, Transit visa, and Medical treatment visa (Non-Immigrant M-T — may be accepted at some offices but inconsistently). If you are on a tourist visa, your best option is to obtain an International Driving Permit from your home country or to change your visa status to a non-immigrant category.

Special Cases and Edge Scenarios

Multiple-entry Non-Immigrant visas: Accepted as long as your current entry stamp is valid. Extension of stay: If you have extended your visa, bring both the original visa and the extension stamp. Change of visa status: If you changed from tourist to non-immigrant in Thailand, bring documentation of the change. Expired visa with pending extension: Bring your extension receipt showing the application is in progress.

Using a Work Permit Instead of Visa

A valid work permit can substitute for a non-immigrant visa at the DLT. However, a work permit is not accepted as proof of address — you will still need a residence certificate (TM.16), Yellow House Book, or Embassy Letter (Affidavit of Residence). The address on a work permit may be the company's address rather than your actual residence.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A lease agreement does not change the visa requirement. The DLT requires a non-immigrant visa or work permit regardless of how long you have been in Thailand or whether you have a lease.
Yes. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is classified as a non-immigrant visa and is accepted by the DLT for driving license applications.
Your visa should be valid on the day you visit the DLT. If it expires within the next few days, renew your visa first. Your driving license validity is independent of your visa — even if your visa expires later, your license remains valid until its own expiry date.
