Converting a UK License to Thai: Step-by-Step (2026)

By TDL Service Team|

Why Convert Your UK License?

British expats in Thailand have a significant advantage when it comes to getting a Thai driving license: the UK has a bilateral agreement with Thailand that allows for license conversion without taking the written or practical driving tests. This means the process is faster and simpler than applying for a new license from scratch.

While you can technically drive with a valid UK license and an International Driving Permit (IDP), converting to a Thai license is the better long-term option. A Thai license is valid for 5 years (after your initial 2-year license), is universally accepted by Thai police and insurance companies, and eliminates any ambiguity about your driving status in Thailand.

Eligibility Requirements

To convert your UK license to a Thai license, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid, current UK driving license — either a photocard license or the older paper license (though the photocard is strongly preferred). Provisional licenses do not qualify.
  • Hold a valid non-immigrant visa in Thailand (B, O, O-A, ED, etc.). Tourist visa holders are not eligible for conversion.
  • Have a valid work permit if you're on a Non-Immigrant B visa.
  • Your UK license must not be suspended or revoked. The DVLA letter (see below) will confirm this.

The UK is one of approximately 30 countries whose licenses Thailand accepts for direct conversion. Holders from these countries skip both the written test and the practical driving test, saving considerable time.

The British Embassy Letter

This is the most important document in the conversion process and the one that causes the most confusion. Here's exactly what you need:

What It Is

You need a license verification letter from the British Embassy in Bangkok (or the Consulate in Chiang Mai). This letter confirms that your UK driving license is genuine and valid.

How to Get It

  1. Book an appointment through the British Embassy's online portal at gov.uk. Search for "notarial and documentary services" in Thailand.
  2. Attend your appointment in person with your original UK driving license and passport.
  3. The embassy will verify your license details and issue a letter confirming its validity.
  4. The current fee is approximately 3,700 THB (subject to change based on exchange rates — the fee is set in GBP).
  5. Processing time: Usually issued on the same day or within 1–2 business days.
Important: The embassy letter is valid for approximately 3 months. Don't get it too far in advance of your DLT visit, but also don't leave it to the last minute in case of scheduling delays.

Complete Document Checklist

Here is every document you need for the DLT conversion appointment:

  1. Original UK driving license (photocard) plus a photocopy of front and back
  2. British Embassy verification letter (original)
  3. Certified translation of your UK license — The DLT requires a Thai translation of your UK license. This can be done by:
    • A DLT-approved translation office (available near major DLT offices)
    • A certified translator registered with a Thai court
    • Cost: approximately 200–500 THB
  4. Passport — original plus photocopies of photo page, visa page, and latest entry stamp
  5. Non-immigrant visa (current and valid)
  6. Work permit (if on Non-Immigrant B visa) — original plus photocopies
  7. Residence certificate — from the British Embassy (can be obtained at the same appointment as the license verification letter) or from Thai Immigration
  8. Medical certificate — from a Thai clinic or hospital, costs 100–200 THB
  9. Passport-sized photos — 2 photos (most offices take digital photos on-site)

The DLT Conversion Process

The conversion process is significantly simpler than a new license application. Here's what happens at the DLT:

  1. Document check: A DLT officer reviews all your documents. This is the most critical step — if anything is missing, you'll be turned away. Allow 20–40 minutes.
  2. Physical tests: You still need to pass the standard physical tests — color blindness, reaction time, and depth perception. These are quick and straightforward.
  3. No written test required. As a UK license holder, you are exempt from the 50-question written exam.
  4. No practical driving test required. You are also exempt from the road test and the reversing/parking test.
  5. Photo and license printing: Your photo is taken and the license is printed. Total time at the DLT: typically 1.5–3 hours (compared to 4–6 hours for a new license application).

The DLT fee for license conversion is 205 THB for a car license and 105 THB for a motorcycle license.

Note: If your UK license includes both car and motorcycle categories, you can convert both in the same visit. You'll receive two separate Thai licenses (car and motorcycle are separate documents in Thailand).

Total Costs Breakdown

Here's a realistic breakdown of the total cost for converting a UK license to Thai:

  • British Embassy letter: ~3,700 THB
  • Residence certificate (if obtained from embassy): ~3,700 THB (or free if obtained from Immigration)
  • License translation: 200–500 THB
  • Medical certificate: 100–200 THB
  • DLT license fee: 205 THB (car) / 105 THB (motorcycle)
  • Photocopies: 20–50 THB

Total: approximately 4,200–8,400 THB depending on whether you get your residence certificate from the embassy or from Immigration.

If you use TDL Service for the conversion process, our service fee covers all the legwork — document preparation, translation coordination, appointment booking, and accompanying you to the DLT. Many UK clients find this worthwhile because it consolidates multiple embassy and DLT visits into a streamlined process.

Tips Specific to UK License Holders

  • Combine embassy appointments. If you need both a license verification letter and a residence certificate from the British Embassy, book them for the same visit to save a trip.
  • Check your UK license expiry date. UK photocard licenses expire every 10 years (though your driving entitlement doesn't). If your photocard has expired, some DLT offices may question its validity. Renew through DVLA's online service before converting if possible.
  • Bring your paper counterpart if you still have one. While not strictly required, some DLT officers like to see additional documentation.
  • Don't surrender your UK license. Unlike some countries, Thailand does not require you to hand over your foreign license when converting. You keep your UK license and receive a separate Thai license.
  • Choose the right DLT office. Not all offices handle foreign license conversions with the same efficiency. See our guide to the best DLT offices in Bangkok for foreigners.
  • Plan for 2–3 days total. Day 1: Embassy appointment. Day 2: Medical certificate and document preparation. Day 3: DLT visit. With TDL Service, we often compress this into 1–2 days.
