Driving License Renewal in Pattaya: Overview
If you already have a Thai driving license and it is approaching its expiration date, you need to renew it at a DLT office. The Pattaya DLT (DLT Chonburi, Banglamung branch) handles all types of license renewals for foreigners living in the Pattaya area. There are two main renewal scenarios: upgrading a 2-year temporary license to a 5-year permanent license, and renewing an existing 5-year license for another 5 years. Each has a slightly different process. The good news is that license renewal at the Pattaya DLT is generally the fastest and simplest DLT transaction — most renewals are completed in 1-2 hours, and no driving test is required for either type of renewal. You can renew your license up to 90 days before the expiration date and up to 1 year after the expiration date without additional penalties (though there are consequences for driving with an expired license during that period). If your license has been expired for more than 1 year but less than 3 years, the process becomes more complex — see the section on expired licenses below.
Upgrading from 2-Year to 5-Year License
If you obtained a new Thai driving license (not a conversion), you received a 2-year temporary license. Before this license expires, you need to upgrade it to a 5-year permanent license. This is not technically a 'renewal' but an 'extension' or 'upgrade' — however, the process is handled at the same DLT counter. You can begin the upgrade process up to 90 days before your 2-year license expires. We recommend doing it 30-60 days before expiration to give yourself a comfortable buffer. Documents needed for the 2-year to 5-year upgrade: (1) Your current 2-year Thai driving license. (2) Original passport with valid non-immigrant visa. (3) Residence certificate from Pattaya Immigration — yes, you need a new one even if you got one for the original application. It must be dated within 30 days. (4) Medical certificate from a Thai clinic — again, must be within 30 days. (5) Passport-size photos (1 inch, 2-3 copies). At the DLT, you will need to: watch a 1-hour safety training video (available in Thai with English subtitles at most offices, including Pattaya), pass the aptitude tests again (color blindness, depth perception, reaction time, peripheral vision), and pay the license fee of 505 THB for a car license or 255 THB for a motorcycle license. You do NOT need to retake the written test or practical driving test. The entire process takes approximately 1.5-2.5 hours at the Pattaya DLT, including the training video.
Renewing a 5-Year License
If you already have a 5-year Thai driving license (either from conversion or from upgrading a 2-year license) and it is approaching expiration, the renewal process is similar but slightly simpler. You can renew up to 90 days before the expiration date. Documents needed: (1) Your current 5-year Thai driving license. (2) Original passport with valid non-immigrant visa. (3) Residence certificate from Pattaya Immigration — dated within 30 days. (4) Medical certificate — dated within 30 days. (5) Passport-size photos (1 inch, 2-3 copies). The process at the DLT: watch the 1-hour safety training video, pass the aptitude tests (same as before — colors, depth, reaction, peripheral vision), pay the license fee (505 THB for car, 255 THB for motorcycle), and receive your new 5-year license. No written test or driving test is required. Total time at Pattaya DLT: approximately 1.5-2 hours. The training video is the longest part of the process. At the Pattaya office, the video is typically shown at set times — usually at 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 1:00 PM. Arriving in time for the 8:30 AM session means you can potentially be finished by 10:00-10:30 AM.
Online vs. In-Person Renewal
The DLT has introduced an online system for certain renewal services through the DLT Smart Queue app and the DLT e-Driving website. However, the online options for foreigners are currently limited. Here is the current status for Pattaya-area renewals. Online booking (DLT Smart Queue app): You can use this app to reserve a queue number in advance, which saves time at the office. Download the app (available on iOS and Android), select the Chonburi office, choose your service type, and pick a date. This does not replace the in-person visit — it simply reserves your spot in the queue so you do not have to wait as long when you arrive. Highly recommended if available for the Pattaya office. Online renewal (DLT e-Driving): The DLT has been developing an online renewal system where you can watch the training video online and only visit the DLT for the aptitude tests and license printing. However, this system is primarily designed for Thai nationals and may not be fully available for foreign license holders. Check the DLT website (dlt.go.th) for current availability. For the time being, most foreigners in Pattaya still need to complete the full renewal process in person. The in-person process at the Pattaya DLT is straightforward and fast enough that the online option offers only marginal time savings. Our recommendation: Visit in person and arrive early. The Pattaya DLT is efficient enough that the total visit rarely exceeds 2 hours for a renewal.
Pattaya DLT Renewal Process: Step by Step
Here is the exact renewal process at the Pattaya DLT office. Step 1: Arrive at the DLT by 8:00 AM (or earlier) and take a queue number. Tell the guard or ticket machine that you are here for a renewal (ต่ออายุ). Step 2: When called, present your documents at the renewal counter. The officer will verify your license, passport, visa, residence certificate, and medical certificate. This takes 10-15 minutes. Step 3: You will be directed to the training video room. The video covers traffic safety, new traffic laws, and accident prevention. It lasts approximately 1 hour. At the Pattaya office, videos are typically shown at 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 1:00 PM. You must watch the complete video — if you arrive mid-video, you will need to wait for the next showing. Step 4: After the video, take the aptitude tests. These are the same tests as for new applicants: color blindness (identify red, green, yellow, blue lights), depth perception (align two sticks), reaction time (press brake when light changes), and peripheral vision (spot objects at edge of vision). The tests take about 10-15 minutes. Step 5: Return to the counter with your completed test results. Pay the renewal fee (505 THB for car, 255 THB for motorcycle, or 755 THB for both). Step 6: Your photo will be taken and your new license card printed. Receive your new 5-year license. Step 7: Done. The entire process from arrival to receiving your new license takes approximately 1.5-2.5 hours. Pro tip: If you arrive early enough for the 8:30 AM video showing, you can often be completely done by 10:00 AM.
What If Your License Expired While in Pattaya
If your Thai driving license has expired, the renewal process depends on how long it has been expired. Expired less than 1 year: You can renew using the standard process described above. No additional tests or penalties apply at the DLT — just the normal renewal procedure. However, driving with an expired license is illegal, and if stopped by police you may be fined 1,000-2,000 THB. Your insurance may also be void while the license is expired. Expired 1-3 years: You can still renew, but you will need to retake the written theory test (50 questions, 90% pass mark) in addition to the training video and aptitude tests. No practical driving test is required. This adds approximately 30-45 minutes to the process. Expired more than 3 years: Your license is considered void, and you must apply for a completely new license from scratch. This means taking the written test AND the practical driving test, effectively going through the new license process. If you have a foreign license, you may be able to do a conversion instead, which avoids the practical test. Expired but you have been outside Thailand: If you left Thailand before your license expired and have just returned, the same rules apply based on how long the license has been expired. The DLT does not make exceptions for time spent abroad. Our strong recommendation: Set a calendar reminder 60-90 days before your license expiration date. Renewing before expiration is dramatically simpler than dealing with an expired license. If you are currently in Pattaya with an expired license, do NOT drive to the DLT — take a taxi or have someone drive you.
Getting Renewal Documents in Pattaya
Here is where to get each required document for your renewal in the Pattaya area. Residence certificate: Pattaya Immigration Office, Soi 5, Jomtien Beach Road. Bring passport, photos, TM30 receipt, and 500 THB. Allow 1-2 business days. Medical certificate: Any clinic in Pattaya can issue this. The clinic across from the DLT on Sukhumvit Road is the most convenient (100-200 THB, 10 minutes). Alternatively, Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, Pattaya International Hospital, or any local clinic. Passport photos: Photo shops near the DLT, or any photo shop in Pattaya. Ask for 1-inch driving license format (not 2-inch passport format). 100-150 THB for 6 photos. Photocopies: Copy shops near the DLT charge 2-5 THB per page. Bring copies of passport photo page, visa page, entry stamp, current license (front and back), and residence certificate. Important timing note: Get your residence certificate 2-3 days before your DLT visit. Get your medical certificate the day before or the morning of your DLT visit (since it expires after 30 days, there is no rush to get it early). Photos can be done anytime. Plan to make at least two separate trips: one to Immigration for the residence certificate, and one to the DLT for the actual renewal.
