What Is the DLT QR Licence App?

The DLT QR Licence app is an official application developed by Thailand's Department of Land Transport that displays a digital version of your Thai driving license on your smartphone. The app connects to the DLT database and shows virtual images of both the front and back of your driving license, complete with a scannable QR code. The QR code feature on physical license cards took effect from September 20, 2019, and the digital version in the app is legally recognized — you can present it to traffic police instead of your physical card, and police can scan the QR code to verify your driver information directly from the DLT database. The app is free to download from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. To activate it, you must have a newer smart license card (issued from September 2019 onward) that has a QR code on the back. You scan this QR code to link your physical card to the app. Once registered, the digital version is officially accepted as a legal replacement for the physical card.

How to Set Up and Register

Setting up the DLT QR Licence app requires a few steps. First, download the app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store — search for 'DLT QR LICENCE' (the official app is published by the Department of Land Transport). Open the app and create an account using your personal details as they appear on your Thai driving license. Next, you need to link your physical license card to the app. This requires a smart license card — the newer format issued from September 2019 onward that has a QR code printed on the back of the card. Flip your license card over and use the app's built-in scanner to scan the QR code. The app will connect to the DLT database and pull up your license information, displaying digital images of both the front and back of your card. If you have an older traditional license without a QR code, you cannot use the app until you upgrade your card. Older cards without QR codes remain valid until they expire, at which point they are automatically replaced with a smart card during renewal. If your card does not have a QR code and you want to use the digital version, you can request a replacement card at any DLT office.

App Features Beyond the Digital License

The DLT QR Licence app offers several features beyond simply displaying your digital license. It stores personal medical information including your blood type, drug allergies, and congenital diseases — useful in emergencies. You can add emergency contact details for relatives or friends. The app also records your organ donation status. Practical features include license expiry notification alerts so you never miss a renewal deadline, and a traffic ticket section where you can view any outstanding fines. The app has GPS-based features allowing you to share your travel route, current location, and vehicle registration number — useful for safety. There is an emergency SOS function that lets you send messages or make phone calls directly from the app in case of an accident or emergency. For daily use, the most important feature is the digital license display and QR verification. When stopped by police, open the app and show the digital license on your screen. The officer can scan the QR code to verify your information against the DLT database in real time.

DLT Smart Queue: Booking Your DLT Appointment

The DLT Smart Queue system is a separate appointment booking platform — available as a mobile app and web portal at gecc.dlt.go.th — that lets you reserve, view, and track queues for DLT services in real time. As of 2025–2026, online appointment booking through Smart Queue is now mandatory at all DLT offices, marking a shift to digital-first government services. Walk-in services have been significantly reduced, and the DLT prioritizes applicants who pre-register via Smart Queue. Services you can book include new license applications, renewals, upgrades from 2-year to 5-year licenses, public driver licenses, vehicle registration, and vehicle inspection. To use it, download the DLT Smart Queue app or visit the web portal. Foreigners should use the dedicated foreigner login at gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin. Select your preferred DLT office, choose your service type and preferred date and time slot, and confirm your booking. On the day of your appointment, you can track your queue status in real time. Note: the Smart Queue app has received mixed user reviews due to login difficulties and slow performance. Allow extra time for registration and be patient with the system — it works, but not always smoothly.

DLT e-Learning: Online Training for License Renewal

Before renewing your Thai driving license, you must complete mandatory online training through the DLT e-Learning platform at www.dlt-elearning.com. This requirement applies to all renewal types — both 2-year-to-5-year upgrades and 5-year-to-5-year renewals. The training consists of video content that you must watch in full — the system tracks engagement and you cannot skip or fast-forward. Training duration is 1 hour for motorcycle license renewal and 2 hours for car license renewal. Videos are split into sections of approximately 15 minutes each. The process includes a brief pre-test, the video training, and a post-test that you must pass. Upon completion, you receive a digital certificate with a QR code. Save a screenshot or printout of this certificate — you must present it at your DLT appointment. The certificate is valid for 180 days (6 months) from the date of completion, giving you a generous window to schedule your in-person DLT visit. Important upcoming change: starting June 2026, drivers under age 55 will be able to renew fully online without visiting a DLT office at all, through integration with the Ministry of Public Health's electronic medical certificate system. An eye examination will still be required. Drivers aged 55 and above must continue with in-person assessments. This change is expected to benefit over 2.5 million motorists annually.
