Google Maps in Thailand
Google Maps is the most widely used navigation app in Thailand and works well for most driving purposes. Coverage is comprehensive in urban areas and along major highways. Real-time traffic data is accurate in Bangkok and other major cities, making it effective for avoiding congestion and choosing between expressway and surface road routes. However, Google Maps has some Thailand-specific limitations. In rural areas, some smaller roads may be inaccurately mapped or missing entirely. Newly constructed roads and recently opened expressway ramps may take weeks or months to appear. Some POI (point of interest) data can be outdated — restaurants that have closed, businesses that have moved. One important tip: set the language to English but keep the voice navigation in Thai if you are taking taxis or asking locals for directions — Thai place names pronounced in English are often unrecognizable. Google Maps allows you to download offline maps for specific areas, which is useful for areas with poor mobile signal.
Alternative Navigation Apps
Longdo Map is a Thai-developed navigation app with superior local data in many areas. It has more accurate and up-to-date mapping of Thai roads, including rural areas, soi numbers, and local landmarks. Longdo Map is particularly useful for finding specific addresses in Bangkok, where the soi (side street) numbering system can be confusing. The app is available in both Thai and English. HERE WeGo is another solid alternative with good offline map support. It works well for driving navigation and has accurate Thailand data. The offline functionality is reliable, making it a good backup for areas with weak cellular coverage. Grab (the ride-hailing app) has a built-in map that is excellent for understanding Thai addresses and locations. Even if you are driving yourself, using Grab to search for a destination can help you verify the correct location before entering it into your driving navigation app. Waze has a growing user community in Thailand, especially in Bangkok. Its crowdsourced traffic and hazard reports can supplement Google Maps data. It is particularly useful for knowing about police checkpoints, accidents, and road closures in real time.
Offline Maps and Poor Signal Areas
Mobile signal coverage in Thailand is generally excellent along major roads and in urban areas, but can be spotty in mountainous regions (northern Thailand), on remote islands, and in some national park areas. Download offline maps before venturing into these areas. In Google Maps, download offline maps for your planned route area: go to your profile picture, select Offline Maps, then Select Your Own Map and draw the area you need. This downloads road data, POIs, and basic navigation. For a road trip, download a generous area around your planned route. HERE WeGo's offline maps are more comprehensive and include full turn-by-turn navigation without any data connection. Download the Thailand map package before your trip. Maps.me is another offline-first option with good Thailand coverage. Regardless of which app you use, always download offline maps for your destination area before leaving reliable connectivity. Thai mobile data plans from AIS, TRUE, and DTAC provide good coverage on major routes, but having offline backup prevents navigation loss at critical moments.
