What Is the DLT QR Licence App?
DLT QR Licence is the official app of Thailand's Department of Land Transport for carrying your Thai driving licence on your phone. It shows a realistic image of the front and back of your card plus the card's QR code, and police or other officials scan that QR code to pull your licence details from the DLT database. The digital licence went live on 15 January 2019 and the app is still maintained: the iOS version was updated to 2.2.4 in May 2026. It is free on the App Store and Google Play. You can only add a licence that is a plastic smart card with a QR code on the back. Laminated paper licences and older cards without a QR code cannot be added. You can swap one for a smart card at a DLT office for the fee set by law, and an old card stays valid until it expires.
How to Download DLT QR Licence (and Use It in English)
Search the App Store or Google Play for DLT QR LICENCE and check that the developer is Department of Land Transport Thailand. On iPhone it needs iOS 14 or later; on Android the official package is th.go.dlt.qrlicence. Do not install it from APK download sites. If it does not show up in your country's store while you are abroad, install it once you are back in Thailand rather than from a third-party site. There is no proper English mode. The App Store lists English as a language, but the store description and most screens are in Thai, and expat users still rely on a translation app to get through setup. Point Google Lens or your phone camera's translate feature at the screen, or follow the steps in the next section.
How to Set Up and Register
- Open the app and register. Route 1: enter your identification number and email address, then type in the one-time code sent to your email. Route 2 (Mobile ID): enter your phone number and verify your identity with your Thai mobile network first.
- Set a 6-digit PIN.
- Choose to add a driving licence and scan the QR code on the back of your plastic licence card. The app pulls the licence from the DLT database and shows the front and back.
Each person can register once. Foreign licence holders: enter the identification number exactly as it is printed on your Thai licence. Some foreign licence holders have had registration rejected since the app launched. If that happens to you, nothing changes legally: your plastic card is still your licence, so carry it.
App Features Beyond the Digital License
Besides the licence itself, the official store listing and the DLT's own description include: a scanner that reads the QR code on a Thai licence and shows that licence's details from the DLT database; information on renewing and on changing licence type; an alert three months before your licence expires; sharing your route, location and vehicle plate number with people you choose; an emergency call or SMS with your location after an accident; a list of emergency phone numbers; a medical section (blood group, drug allergies) for first responders; and DLT news. For daily use the licence display is what matters: when stopped, open the app and show the screen, and the officer scans the QR code.
Legal Validity: Can It Replace the Physical Card?
Yes. The DLT says drivers can show their licence electronically through DLT QR Licence instead of the physical card, and officers check it by scanning the QR code in the app. The DLT has also said a photo or copy of your licence saved on your phone can be shown, as long as both the front and the back are complete and the QR code is clear. The app is still the better choice, because the officer gets the data straight from the DLT database. Practical limits: an officer outside the main cities may not be used to scanning it, some car rental companies still ask for the physical card, and outside Thailand the app counts for nothing. Carry the card when you travel or rent a vehicle, and treat the app as the backup for everyday driving.
DLT Smart Queue: Booking Your DLT Appointment
The DLT Smart Queue system is a separate appointment booking platform — available as a mobile app and web portal at gecc.dlt.go.th — that lets you reserve, view, and track queues for DLT services in real time. Booking is strongly recommended but not universally mandatory: renewals accept walk-ins nationwide (booked applicants are served first), while new-license and conversion appointments at busy offices can be effectively booking-only because daily walk-in capacity runs out — practice varies by branch. The DLT prioritizes applicants who pre-register via Smart Queue. Services you can book include new license applications, renewals, upgrades from 2-year to 5-year licenses, public driver licenses, vehicle registration, and vehicle inspection. To use it, download the DLT Smart Queue app or visit the web portal. Foreigners should use the dedicated foreigner login at gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin. Select your preferred DLT office, choose your service type and preferred date and time slot, and confirm your booking. On the day of your appointment, you can track your queue status in real time. Note: the Smart Queue app has received mixed user reviews due to login difficulties and slow performance. Allow extra time for registration and be patient with the system — it works, but not always smoothly.
DLT e-Learning: Online Training for License Renewal
Renewing a Thai licence includes a short training course, and you can do it online at www.dlt-elearning.com before your visit. For a 5-year licence that is still valid or expired less than a year, the course is 1 hour, for a car or a motorcycle alike. If the licence expired more than a year ago, it is 2 hours. Foreigners register under For Foreigner with a passport number. The videos cannot be skipped and include short timed questions. When you finish you get a slip with a QR code, valid for 6 months from completion, and a screenshot of it is accepted at the DLT counter. Full walkthrough, including the foreigner login: our DLT e-learning guide.
The fully online renewal, with no office visit, is still not open as of 26 October 2026. It was announced for drivers 55 or under and then postponed past its March and June 2026 targets. On 15 October 2026 a senior DLT source told Thairath it is expected to start in December 2026. Identity checks use a Thai national ID card or the ThaID app, so foreign passport holders should plan on renewing in person. That visit is quicker than it used to be: since June 2026 the colour-vision test is gone for all renewals and most renewals involve only two quick eye checks. Status and eligibility: online renewal in 2026.
What You Can Do Online for a Thai Driving Licence in 2026
Less than many sites claim. As of October 2026 these parts are online:
- Training for a renewal at dlt-elearning.com, where foreigners log in with a passport.
- Booking your DLT visit through DLT Smart Queue, as an app or at gecc.dlt.go.th.
- Carrying your licence on your phone with DLT QR Licence.
- Checking a licence by scanning the QR code on the card with DLT QR Licence.
A first Thai licence, a foreign-licence conversion and, for now, every renewal still need a visit to a DLT office. You cannot get a Thai driving licence fully online in 2026.
