2-Year Temporary License

When you apply for a brand-new Thai driving license (not a conversion), you receive a 2-year temporary license. This is a full, valid license — you can drive anywhere in Thailand and it is accepted for all purposes including insurance. The only difference from the 5-year license is the shorter validity period. After the 2-year period, you upgrade to a 5-year license through the renewal process.

5-Year License

The 5-year license is issued in two situations: (1) when you convert a foreign license (you get a 5-year license directly), and (2) when you renew a 2-year temporary license. The 5-year license is renewable indefinitely, meaning once you upgrade, you simply renew every 5 years. There is no additional testing required for renewal if you renew before expiry.

Key Differences

Both licenses are equally valid for driving and insurance purposes. The main differences are: validity period (2 years vs 5 years), government fee (205 THB vs 505 THB for car licenses), and how you obtain them (new application vs conversion/renewal). There is no visual difference on the physical card aside from the expiry date.

How to Upgrade from 2-Year to 5-Year

You can apply to upgrade starting 60 days before your 2-year license expires. The upgrade process requires only a medical certificate and passing the aptitude tests — no written or driving test. You can upgrade at any DLT office in Thailand. The fee is 505 THB for a 5-year car license. Do not let your 2-year license expire, as this complicates the process.
