Current Status: What You Can Do Online Now
As of March 2026, the DLT has made two parts of the renewal process available online, and both are now mandatory. First, the e-learning course at www.dlt-elearning.com must be completed before your DLT visit. This covers road safety, traffic regulations, and defensive driving through video modules. The course takes 2 hours for car license holders and 1 hour for motorcycle. Second, DLT Smart Queue appointment booking at gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin is required — walk-in service for foreign applicants is no longer available. Through the Smart Queue system you can select your preferred DLT office, choose a date and time slot, and receive a confirmation that you bring to your appointment. You can also check your license status and expiry date online through the DLT e-Service portal. These online steps save significant time compared to the old system where you had to watch training videos at the DLT office and wait in unpredictable queues. However, a fully end-to-end online renewal is not yet available for most people — that changes in June 2026.
What Still Requires an In-Person Visit
Even with the expanded online services, several steps still require a physical visit to the DLT office. The four aptitude tests — color blindness identification, depth perception alignment, peripheral vision detection, and brake reaction time measurement — must be taken on DLT testing equipment under staff supervision. Your photograph for the new license card is taken at the office using their standardized camera setup. Biometric data collection, including your signature, is done in person. Document verification requires staff to inspect your original passport, visa, medical certificate, and residence certificate. Finally, your physical license card is printed and issued at the office. These in-person requirements exist because the DLT needs to verify your identity and confirm your physical fitness to drive. The aptitude tests cannot be self-administered, and the photo must meet specific DLT standards for the license card. For most applicants under current rules, the in-person visit takes 1 to 3 hours with a Smart Queue appointment.
Coming June 2026: Fully Online Renewal
Starting in June 2026, the DLT is launching a fully online renewal system that eliminates the need for an in-person DLT visit for qualifying applicants. This is a major shift in how Thailand handles license renewals and represents a key milestone in the country's digital government transformation. The new system integrates the DLT directly with the Ministry of Public Health's electronic medical certificate platform. Instead of obtaining a paper medical certificate and bringing it to the DLT, your doctor will submit your examination results digitally, and the DLT system will access them automatically. The physical aptitude tests at the DLT (color blindness, depth perception, peripheral vision, brake reaction) will be waived for qualifying drivers — only an eye examination at a participating clinic is required, and the results are transmitted electronically. Your new license will be issued digitally, with the physical card mailed to your registered address. The DLT estimates this system will benefit approximately 2.5 million motorists annually once fully operational.
Who Qualifies for Online Renewal
The June 2026 fully online renewal system has specific eligibility requirements. You must be under 55 years of age. Your license must have been expired for less than 1 year (or still be valid). You must have a clean driving record with no suspensions or revocations. Drivers aged 55 and over must continue with the in-person process, including all four aptitude tests at the DLT office. This age threshold exists because the DLT considers the physical aptitude tests — particularly peripheral vision and brake reaction time — more important for older drivers. If your license has been expired for more than 1 year, you do not qualify for online renewal regardless of age, because you would need to retake the written test which is administered in person. Foreign applicants should note that the initial rollout may prioritize Thai nationals, with foreign passport holders added to the system in later phases. We will update this article as the DLT confirms the timeline for foreign applicants.
How the Digital Medical Certificate System Works
The backbone of the June 2026 online renewal is the integration between the DLT and the Ministry of Public Health's electronic medical certificate system. Here is how it works: you visit a participating clinic or hospital for an eye examination. The medical professional conducts the examination and records the results in the Ministry of Public Health's digital system. The DLT accesses these results electronically using your national ID or passport number — no paper certificate changes hands. The eye examination confirms your visual acuity meets the minimum standards for driving. Unlike the current process, you do not need a general fitness medical certificate for online renewal — the eye exam alone satisfies the requirement for under-55 applicants. The physical fitness tests normally conducted at the DLT (depth perception, peripheral vision, brake reaction) are waived entirely for qualifying online renewals. This system relies on clinics being registered with the Ministry of Public Health's digital platform, so make sure your chosen clinic participates before booking your appointment. The electronic certificate is processed within 24 hours of your examination.
Step-by-Step: How to Use DLT e-Learning
The mandatory e-learning course is completed at www.dlt-elearning.com. Here is how to register and finish the course. Visit the website and click the 'For Foreigner' button on the main page — this switches the interface to English and sets up the correct course for foreign license holders. Create an account using your passport number, email address, and Thai phone number. Once registered, log in and select the appropriate course: 'License Renewal - Car' (2 hours) or 'License Renewal - Motorcycle' (1 hour). The course is divided into modules of approximately 15 minutes each. You must watch each module completely before moving to the next one. The system tracks your engagement — if you switch tabs, minimize the window, or attempt to fast-forward, the progress timer pauses. You do not need to complete all modules in a single sitting. Your progress is saved, and you can return to finish later. After completing all modules, the system generates a completion certificate with a unique QR code. This certificate is valid for 180 days from the date of completion. Print the certificate or save it on your phone to show at the DLT office. If you hold both car and motorcycle licenses, you must complete both courses separately.
DLT Smart Queue: Booking Your Appointment
The DLT Smart Queue system is your gateway to scheduling a renewal appointment. Visit gecc.dlt.go.th/dltsmartqueue/foreignerlogin — note the dedicated foreign login portal, which is different from the Thai citizen login. Register with your passport number, nationality, and Thai phone number. You will receive an OTP via SMS to verify your account. Once logged in, select 'License Renewal' as your service type. Choose your preferred DLT office from the list — all offices in Thailand are available. Select a date and time slot from the calendar. Available slots are shown in green; fully booked slots appear in gray. Morning slots (8:30 to 10:00 AM) tend to fill up fastest, especially at popular offices like Chatuchak in Bangkok. After confirming your booking, you receive a confirmation number via SMS and email. Save this confirmation — you will need it when you arrive at the DLT. You can reschedule or cancel your appointment through the same portal up to 24 hours before the scheduled time. If you need to book for both car and motorcycle renewal, you can typically do both in a single appointment slot. Arrive at the DLT 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled time to check in at the foreign applicant counter.
